Immortality and the Blessing of the End

Image
source: ( https://medium.com/the-ploy/is-immortality-possible-476f07701a17) Most books I’ve read make one believe that immortality is some sort of endgame for humanity and that everyone will eventually become immortal. As a kid, the idea fascinated me. The idea of existing forever, trying all sorts of things, never losing anybody. The idea seemed truly blissful… until I grew older. If you ask me now if I want immortality, I probably wouldn’t hesitate in refusing the offer. The reason for it is pretty simple too. The short of it is that there is no merit to living that long. The long of it? I’ll try to explain it to you in this rant of mine. One reason I feel immortality is an overrated concept is that death gives life meaning. May sound weird but stay with me. Say I ask you to go skydiving without a parachute or deep sea diving with no equipment. You’d refuse right,...

The Scam Known As Equality

Image
image credit:  https://www.imf.org/en/Topics/Inequality/introduction-to-inequality  “All men are created equal”, seems like a noble sentiment made to ensure no one is hurt because of who they are. It is like one of those statements which sound very rosy on paper but don’t mean much in practice. Why? Because the very concept of equality is an illusion. No one is really the same, we try to create a sense of equality among by people by bringing surrounding conditions to what we consider normal. This may seem like a weird concept. Let me explain, lets take an example of a student. We have a Student A, an academically average student. Their friends, the cream of the crop 4.0 students with a bright future. Is A equal to his friends? No. Let us look at why. To A, their normal is getting an average score on every test while their friends’ normal is acing every test. Because of this difference in the defi...

You are your mistakes. Or Are you?

On my way to school today, an interesting piece of street art caught my eye. Apart from the fact that it was really good art, I don’t remember much about what was actually drawn on it. Instead, what I want to talk about is the caption on it, “You are not your mistakes”. At first glance, I agreed with it. I inferred that artist was trying to tell us that mistakes don’t define us. It tried to convey the idea that we should move on with our lives and not dwell on our mistakes. A simple recipe to a happy life. I had no issues with it. I passed the exhibit and got onto my train. Having the time to think about what I had seen, my opinion on the quote changed. I thought to myself, “aren’t all of us defined by the mistakes we make?”. If no one ever made any mistakes, will we ever really learn anything? Not every choice we make in life is the right one, some choices result in a less than favorable situation. These situations teach us something, make us stronger or can even change our pe...

Is The True Story Always The Truth?

If I told you that the true story was not always the truth, would you believe me? Regardless of whether you would or wouldn't, you would take a moment to think about the question right. Something along the lines of, "what is the point of this question? Isn't the true story based on the truth? How then can a true story not be the truth?" These are all good questions. I will try to explain my thoughts and hopefully be able to convince you that the true story is not always true. Before we dive into the depths of this question, we should first explore the idea of truth. To me, the truth is an irrefutable piece of information. An absolute statement that is grounded in facts and supported by reason. For example, if I were to tell you that it becomes dark when the sun sets, you would believe me instantly. That is because you have seen it become dark after sun set for the duration of your life. For you it, is a piece of information that is grounded in facts and supported by e...

It's your choice

Humans live by making choices. The history of our species is defined by the choices we make. Wars waged over the choices of certain individuals, people losing their wealth over their choices in investments even our day-to-day routine is defined by the choices we make. By now it should be pretty clear that making choices is just as important to our survival as breathing, eating or mating. If you look closely, you learn a funny thing about choices. When we make them, we think nothing of it at the time and go on about our lives. However there comes a time when we must face the consequence of said choice. For a small choice, the moment of truth comes relatively sooner (like oversleeping and missing a class), these, in my opinion, are the less dangerous choices because we deal with them in a way that harms nobody else. It’s true, think about it… The larger the choices we make, the longer it takes to face the consequences. If I had to pick a reason, it would be that we try to convince oursel...

A Few Words On God

The belief that everyone should be judged in the same fashion. This is embodied in the foundations of the judicial system. The belief that every person should have the power to determine the future of society. This is embodied in the idea of democracy. The point I am trying to get at here is that every belief held by people manifests itself in some form or the other. This includes religion. While many hold the belief that the being we call God physically exists, I have a different perspective. I would say that "God" is just an abstract concept we created to embody our beliefs. This idea could resolve the age-old "Science vs God" debate. For some, this may be a hard to pill to swallow, so I will attempt to help by providing an example. There are three fundamental process that sustain our universe: Creation, Preservation and Destruction. Every entity is created, then preserved until it is time for it to be destroyed. The Hindus took this idea and manifested it into ...
